ATLANTA: After months of anticipation, Castellucci Hospitality Group (CHG) – the team behind Cooks & Soldiers, Double Zero, The Iberian Pig and Sugo – is proud to share first details of their forthcoming concept at Krog Street Market: Bar Mercado. The casual, multi-regional Spanish tapas restaurant and bar will open later this spring.
“The name, ‘Bar Mercado’ is derived from a visit to Madrid’s Mercado de San Miguel years ago,” said Fred Castellucci, owner of CHG. “The literal translation means ‘market bar,’ both appropriate for its location in Krog Street Market and also reflective of the approachable menu we plan to deliver – the greatest hits of Spanish cuisine that can be enjoyed following an afternoon stroll on the Beltline or during a lively Saturday night out with friends.”
Inspired by Spain’s robust food culture, Bar Mercado’s menu will reflect the diverse flavors and preparations found in the celebrated tapas bars of Madrid, a melting pot of regional specialties. Following King Felipe II’s reign in the 16th century, residents of Spain’s countryside flocked to the capital city and brought a diversity of cooking traditions with them. Today, locals and visitors can sample a variety of these provincial dishes, from croquetas to pimientos de Padron, under one roof at the Mercado.
Later this spring, locals and visitors can experience el tapeo – or going out for tapas – for themselves while dining at Bar Mercado. Much like Mercado de San Miguel, Krog Street Market is Atlanta’s gathering place for friends and families to sip, stroll and feast on delicious, global flavors. The restaurant and bar aims to capture the authentic, relaxed feel of a traditional tapas bar by offering small, flavor-packed dishes such as alcachofas, idiazabal-stuffed piquillo peppers and estafodo. Three of CHG’s noteworthy chefs are collaborating on the menu, including executive chef Landon Thompson of Cooks & Soldiers, executive chef Eric Roberts of The Iberian Pig and CHG co-owner and chef John Castellucci. Once open, John will helm the kitchen and oversee the restaurant’s ingredient-driven menu of classic tapas dishes, meats, cheeses and traditional bar bites. Behind the bar, guests can expect a large selection of Spanish wines and straightforward cocktails.
